Does Instagram Notify When You Screenshot a Close Friends Story?

Updated 2026-10-19 · ClosePush Team

No. Instagram does not notify anyone when you screenshot their story, Close Friends or not. The only screenshot notifications on Instagram are for disappearing photos and videos sent in DMs ("view once"), not for stories.

Stories: no notification

This applies to regular stories, Close Friends stories and highlights. Instagram tested story screenshot alerts years ago but never kept them.

The exception: disappearing messages in DMs

If someone sends you a photo or video in DMs set to "view once" or "allow replay", the sender can see if you took a screenshot. That has nothing to do with stories.

What this means if you post to Close Friends

Close Friends limits who sees a story, but anyone on the list can still screenshot or film it. Don't post anything to Close Friends you wouldn't want shared.

If you use Close Friends for your whole audience (to get the green ring), treat it like a public story. More on that in should you add all your followers to Close Friends?
